Good News: Women Changing Architecture is an exhibition produced by MAXXI national museum of XXI century arts, and it aims to underline, to an international audience, new and more inclusive architecture perspectives and to focus on the importance and contribution made by women, women teams and collectives in the field of contemporary architecture, urbanism and design in Italy. It showcases parts of its original exhibition Good News: Women in Architecture, and it’s already travelled to Stockholm and Doha – it will open in Sarajevo on 14.9. at the Historical museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Days of architecture Sarajevo have made a contribution to the exhibition by adding biographical and visual profiles of 4 local architects: Greta Ferušić, Ognjenka Finci, Vedina Babahmetović i Sanja Galić Grozdanić.

It is difficult to find women in history of architecture even though their contributions have greatly shaped our contemporary communities, societies and the world we live in today. By opening up to diversity and representation in architecture, we discover new perspectives and insight that is often overlooked. Starting on 14.9.2023. and following next 14 days, together with MAXXI and the Embassy of Italy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and CRVENA Association for art and culture, we put women in the center of all architectural discussions while exploring possible new narratives in local and Italian architectural identities. “It is also extremely important for us to talk about this topic and from different perspectives, specially having in mind recent event in our countries – now even more than ever it is of the most urgent importance that our community starts moving towards contemporary understanding of gender equality and rights of women,” it was stated from Days of architecture Sarajevo.

Days of architecture Sarajevo are, together, with 32 cultural institutions and organizations, part of LINA European Architecture Platform. LINA connects cultural institutions with young creatives who work on the crossing of architecture and areas linked with spatial and urban cultures. LINA has a goal of promoting rising talents, and directing design processes towards regenerative practices and sustainability paradigms according to the European Green Deal.

In May 2023, group of young creatives from Slovenia, North Macedonia and Germany have been invited to Sarajevo as part of the [UN]CONTEXT: Sarajevo residency. They’ve spent a week in Sarajevo exploring and researching architectural layers and the meaning of locality – at the same time, a similar topic was explored at the TU Wien as part of their LINA programme in Sekrin, Austria. Results of these two research hubs in Sarajevo and Vienna will be showcased in Manifesto gallery of contemporary arts in Sarajevo.

“Has Sarajevo really become non-contextual? Are disorder and ‘un-context’ its only reality? To the contrary: the city is endowed with so much context it has become hard to read. In contrast to vast global geographies that can only be described as non-places, Sarajevo is anything but generic. The city is crowded with meanings, signs, symbols and icons. Many of them tell the stories of conflict, domination, corruption and fight for power. Many others attest to the strength of the community, to acts of kindness, humour and collaboration. Some of them, still dormant, have the potential to define the context of Sarajevo anew.” LINA Fellows

"100 Ideas for the Western Balkan - Designing Urban Imaginaries" exhibition explores alternative paradigms in how the next generation of architects is emerging out of the culturally rich and diverse cities of Sarajevo, Tirana, Belgrade Skopje, Podgorica, Pristina, and, have endured multiplicities of shared overlapping histories of Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian colonization, living through a century of socialism, urbicide, turbo-privatization, human-, and environmental crisis. Today we are looking for the next people and the new places in architecture, urbanism, and design where we identify potential for creating a more circular, regenerative, participatory, sustainable, and resilient architecture format starting to exist. The exhibition’s primary focus is to examine and demonstrate the situated role of architecture as a forceful driver for cultural freedom and self-determination. To spark a debate for concrete engagement with the spirit of the contemporary state of affairs of Western Balkan architecture. We are mediating the individual and the collective invention and reinterpretation from the next generation of architects and designers, preparing for the next phase of radical transformation. We see the opportunity of registering and mapping the site-specific architectural ideas, bringing the works and concepts into the methodological framework of Urbanthinktank_Next’s, urban toolbox of "100 Ideas for the Western Balkan - Designing Urban Imaginaries".
Anchored in Sarajevo, we celebrate the first iteration of this exhibition in the Western Balkan driven by the energy of the 15th Days of Architecture Sarajevo – providing the ideal platform for lecture series, conferences, symposia, and workshops in Sarajevo, the region’s most diverse and multicultural city and capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina – to set off discussions and debate around an emerging design community, simultaneously expanding the scope and audience for architecture in the Balkans. The Western Balkan cities are the sites of profound exploration, giving stimulus for diverse models of spatial imagination, considering the so-far overlooked architectural examples in architectural practice that are developing below the radar of predicament and digital innovation.

The 15th edition of Days of Architecture Sarajevo is its wind in the back- an ideal platform for lecture series, panels and workshops in Sarajevo, a place that we underline as the most diverse and multicultural city of the region. How can we as architects re-imagine Sarajevo 40 years delayed development as a space of freedom designing a Regenerative Olympic Legacy?

How can we engage the city’s Olympic Spirit as a transformative force and question existing programs, resources, and imperfections? How can we propose urban models for a sustainable future and co-design citizens’ ideas mending top down and bottom up approaches?
Mega-events in cities, raise questions of socio-environmental sustainability, as they expand in size and scale. Globally Sarajevo city became one of the most successful venues for the 1984 XIV Olympic Winter Games, but its Legacy could never play out due to the Bosnian war in 1992. Students will develop an integrated urban legacy vision, and design a prototypical architecture project. The studio re-imagines the Olympics to build the city’s future, designing inclusivity and re-activating collective action, as a radical continuation of the games.
